Personnel

Good development opportunities
To satisfy high demands, training and competence development are offered on a continuous basis. Opportunities for personal development are good, particularly since BT is investing more than ever in competence development. To safeguard its competencies, the Group has consolidated its efforts in the BT Competence Challenge, which encompasses leadership training, a mentoring program, sales and marketing training, and a trainee program.
Active diversity work
BT supports equal rights and duties for women and men in every area of working life. Active, long-term diversity work is vital to any modern, international workplace. It is especially important in a company like BT, which is still dominated by men. Diversity work covers issues such as working environments, parental leave, harassment, recruitment, development opportunities and salaries.

Most employees in service
At year-end 2003 the Group had 8026 employees, compared with 7,794 in the previous year. The increase is due to growth of the serviceorganisation.

The Group’s focus on service is also reflected in the areas where employees work. No less than 45 percent of the total number of employees work directly or indirectly with some form of service. Sales and marketing employ around 14 percent and production and product development 30 percent. Administration and management account for the remaining 11 percent.
