Driver Assessment System

This system has been developed by The Institute for the Development of Industrial Psychology in Stockholm, Sweden on behalf of BT Industries, to help companies when recruiting forklift truck drivers. Different people have different skills. Identifying and building on personal skills is the key to success. As with any job, driving a forklift truck demands a particular skill-set in order to achieve the best results.

The BT Driver Assessment System is based on a series of physiological tests that measure an individual in five distinct areas, all of which are important in the make-up of a successful forklift truck driver.

The system is based on a simple control console with buttons, joysticks and pedals, and requires no computer skills at all. The test takes about 30 minutes to complete. Results are presented in a simple graphical form and enable companies to compare candidate drivers' results with those of existing drivers in their operations, or industry statistics.

Whilst it's important to recognise that there are many other factors that will ultimately determine the success of any individual driver including, for example, attitude, physical capacity, education standards, communication skills and personal integrity, the BT Driver Assessment System allows companies to scientifically measure some of the key characteristics that will play a vital part.

The tests require experienced supervision, which is provided by your authorised BT service provider. However for larger organisations that require in-house test facilities, training is provided to allow in-house supervision.

The BT Driver Assessment System requires no computer skills whatsoever. The entire test is carried out using a simple control panel with coloured buttons, joysticks and foot pedals.

TEST 1 - MULTIPLE CHOICE REACTION
This test presents the candidate driver with a series of sounds and on-screen symbols, and requires specific reactions from the candidate, by pressing a particular button or foot pedal. The system calculates speed of re action and tolerance of stress - both important factors when driving in a busy warehouse.

TEST 2 - HAND-EYE CO-ORDINATION
Requiring the candidate to "steer" a ball around a tight circuit, this test can determine the levels of precision that the driver can deliver, as well as eye- hand and hand-hand co-ordination. Again this relates directly to demands placed on a truck driver when manoeuvring in tight situations or handling goods at height.

TEST 3 - WORK PERFORMANCE SERIES
This test requires the candidate to repeatedly respond to very simple arithmetic questions. It is not a test of mathematical skill - it is a test of continuous attention, and identifies the candidate's ability to concentrate and maintain attention over prolonged periods - as would be required in the workplace.

TEST 4 - LOGIC TEST
This measures the individual's ability to handle problems, by presenting the candidate with different puzzles to solve. It provides an indication of how an individual would react when confronted with non- standard situations.

TEST 5 - DICE TEST
Assessing the spatial perception of a candidate, determining the ability to work in three dimensions - as is required when manoeuvring goods in confined situations.
