Developing and maintaining safe driving practice is perhaps the biggest challenge to managers of storage and distribution systems, particularly when trying to avoid the impact of bad habits creeping in over long periods of time.
There have always been a number of methods available, ranging from practical instruction to classroom training sessions. The problem for most companies is how to deliver effective training at an affordable cost, and in a way that does not negatively impact on productivity, by interrupting the normal flow of the operation.

A NEW CONCEPT IN DRIVER TRAINING The BT Driver Safety System is a new concept. Using a simple PC with a carefully designed interactive training programme, it allows safe driving practices to be taught in a simple but effective way. Under normal circumstances companies are able to locate PC-based "Learning Stations" within the workplace - be it in a corner of the warehouse or a rest-room, allowing regular access by truck drivers, but without interrupting workflow. The BT Driver Safety System does not aim to deliver specific instruction about how to operate particular types of truck, although this type of instructional training course is also available from BT.
A PERSONAL TRAlNING SYSTEM Each driver is provided with a personal training system, including a personal CD-ROM disc, which even allows self-help on a home PC. The driver is then able to work through the training programme at his or her own pace, and the system is designed in such a way that previous computer skills are not required.
A PROVEN METHOD OF TRAlNING The training principles employed in the BT Driver Safety System are well established, and the transfer of knowledge has been measured as extremely high. This is because the pace of the training is determined by the individual, and each section of the programme incorporates test sessions.

A SECURE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM The BT Driver Safety System includes a management-controlled test module which enables each driver to be formally assessed at the end of each stage of the course. The results from these tests can be incorporated into personnel files as a record of the training. All tests are "randomised" to ensure that total integrity is maintained throughout the assessment process.
No previous computer skills are required to use the BT Driver Safety System. The training programme includes a number of different modules, including identification of "the right truck for the job"; ergonomics including personal health and safety; truck components; engineering principles; daily safety checks and maintenance; material handling principles and traffic safety rules.
Training modules are presented to the driver according to the identified type of truck(s) that he or she regularly uses, which can range from powered pallet trucks, stackers and reach trucks, to order picking, very narrow aisle and counterbalance trucks.
